Chat and Ask

Ask questions about your sites in plain words, from any page or from Chat, and check exactly which data each answer used.

You can ask Obelisk about your sites in plain words, such as "What should I fix first this week?" It answers from your own data and shows where each answer came from.

Ask from any page

  1. Press Ask in the top bar. The Ask Obelisk panel opens on the right, over the page you're on.
  2. Under the title, Looking at names what's on your screen, such as an audit, an issue, a page or a chart. A chip with the same name sits above the question box, so Obelisk knows what you mean by "this".
  3. Type your question in the box and press Enter, or tap one of the suggested questions. Press Shift+Enter for a new line.

To ask without the screen's context, press × on the chip. The suggested questions change with the screen. On an issue, for example, you'll see "Explain this issue simply", "How do I fix this on my site?" and "How much does fixing this help?"

While Obelisk answers, the question box's button turns into Stop, which ends the answer. Under each answer, Ask a follow-up offers more questions. Use the pencil button for a New chat, or Open in chat to continue the conversation on the Chat page.

Chat

Open Chat in the sidebar. With no conversation open, it asks What can I help with? and shows starter questions grouped by Fix, Grow and Report. Each one is written from your own data, such as the top problem on your site, so you only see questions that apply to you.

On the left you'll find New chat, then your conversations. Waiting for you shows conversations where an agent needs your OK. Recent shows the rest, newest first. Press Show older for earlier ones.

The tabs at the top switch between Conversations, Actions (changes Obelisk made after you approved them, each with Undo) and, when it's switched on for your workspace, What Obelisk knows. Approvals and undo are covered in Agents, approvals and spend caps.

Sources: see what an answer read

Every answer ends with a sources line, such as "2 sources", followed by a numbered chip for each piece of data Obelisk read. Numbers in the answer point to those chips. Click a chip to open What this answer read: the exact rows Obelisk used, such as the issues, pages or numbers from your latest audit.

What Obelisk can see

On the right of Chat, What Obelisk can see lists the data it can use for your most recently audited site: your Latest audit, Search Console, Google Analytics, Competitors and Where agents publish. Each says when it last synced, or shows Connect, Add or Set up if it isn't connected yet. Connecting more data gives better answers.

What Obelisk knows shows what Obelisk has learned about your business, with where each line came from. See Intelligence.

Plans and limits

Chat comes with every plan when it's switched on for your workspace. Each plan includes a monthly assistant allowance, and larger plans include more. When it runs out, answers stop until the next month. See Billing and plans.

If something goes wrong

  • "This workspace has used its assistant allowance for this month.": answers resume next month, or upgrade your plan.
  • "This needed more work than one answer allows. Try a narrower question.": ask about one site, page or issue at a time.
  • "The assistant isn't available right now. Try again later."
  • "The connection dropped.": press Try again. The answer picks up where it stopped.
  • "Couldn't send this.": press Try again.
