Google Search Console shows how your pages do in Google search. Google Analytics shows how people find your site and what they do there. Connecting them adds real Google data to your reports. Obelisk only reads this data. It can't change anything in your Google account.
Where to connect
Each site has its own Connections page. With the site on screen, open your account menu in the top bar and choose Connections. The page lists what's Connected and what's Not connected.
You can also start from the Get started checklist on Home (Connect Google Search Console), from the note on Pages, or from What Obelisk can see in Chat.
Connect Search Console
- On Connections, press Connect on the Google Search Console row.
- Press Continue with Google.
- In the Google window, choose your account and leave the Search Console box ticked. If your browser blocks the window, choose Continue in this tab.
- Under Which Search Console property?, pick the one for your site. A property is how Search Console names a site. Whole domain covers every address on your domain. Only covers one address. The one that Matches your site is picked for you.
- Press Connect. You'll see "Search Console connected for" your site.
Connect Google Analytics
- On Connections, press Connect on the Google Analytics row.
- Press Continue with Google and leave the Google Analytics box ticked.
- Under Which Google Analytics property?, pick the property that tracks your site. The matching one is picked for you.
- Press Connect.
Your workspace uses one Google account for both connections.
What you get
From Search Console:
- Which of your pages show up in Google, in the Google column on Pages and in the Crawl to index tile on Overview.
- Clicks, impressions and average position for each page. Impressions are how often a page was shown in search results.
- Better issue ranking: the impact of each issue uses your pages' Google clicks from the last 90 days.
From Google Analytics:
- Visits, people and new visitors each day, by channel and source, on the Analytics page.
- The pages people land on, and the sign-ups, enquiries and sales that follow.
The first Google Analytics sync fetches about 16 months of history, newest first. Until it's done, the row says Still getting older months. After that, both connections update about once a day. Press Sync now on a row to fetch the latest data.
Change or disconnect
Open the three-dot menu on a connected row:
- Change property picks a different property.
- Disconnect stops new data.
Disconnecting Search Console stops updates for every site that uses this Google account in the workspace. What we already fetched stays in past audits. To remove it, press Delete it on the row afterwards. Disconnecting Google Analytics deletes everything we fetched from Google Analytics for that site.
If something goes wrong
- "Google didn't share access. Nothing was connected.": you cancelled in the Google window. Try again.
- "Google didn't include Search Console access": try again and leave the box ticked.
- "None of your Search Console properties match": add the site in Search Console, or press Use another account.
- "Ask whoever manages your site in Search Console to add you": your Google account can't see that property's data.
- Search Console needs reconnecting: press Reconnect and sign in to Google again.
- "Couldn't sync just now. Your report keeps the last good data.": press Try again on the row, or wait for the next sync.
