Add a site and run an audit

Add a website, choose which pages to check, follow the audit as it runs, and audit the site again later.

An audit checks your website's pages for problems that hold it back in search. You add a site once, then audit it as often as your plan allows.

Add a site

  1. Choose Add a site. You'll find it on Home, at the bottom of the site switcher in the top bar, on the Sites page in your account menu, and in search (⌘K).
  2. Type the address, like acme.co.uk. No need to type https://. We add it.
  3. Wait a moment while we look at the site. You'll see a line such as "Found a sitemap with about 1,200 pages." A sitemap is a file that lists a site's pages. Without one, we follow links from the homepage.
  4. Press Add and audit. To add the site now and audit it later, press Add without auditing, then Start first audit when you're ready.

Choose which pages

Open Which pages? before you add the site to choose Whole site, Only pages that start with or Skip pages that start with, then add paths like /shop. Later, you can change how we check the site in Audit settings in the sidebar. Changes apply from your next audit.

Page and site limits

Your plan sets how many pages one audit checks and how many sites a workspace can hold:

  • Free: up to 500 pages per audit, 1 site.
  • Pro: up to 5,000 pages per audit, 3 sites.
  • Team and Agency: up to 10,000 pages per audit, 10 sites on Team and 30 on Agency.

If your site is bigger than your plan's limit, the add screen says so, and we check the most linked pages up to the limit. Each plan also has a monthly page allowance. See Billing and plans.

Watch the audit run

The report opens straight away and fills in live. A progress card shows each step, such as Finding your pages, Checking pages and Measuring speed, with a time estimate. Your score appears once we've checked enough pages, first as an early estimate.

To stop early, press Stop, then Stop and show results. We keep the pages already checked and mark the report as partial. Press Finish the audit later to check the rest.

Leave and come back

You can leave the page, or close your browser. The audit keeps going on our side. On Home, the site shows Auditing while it runs, and the site switcher shows Auditing now. Come back to the report at any time.

Audit again

Open the site's Overview and press Audit again at the top of the report. On Home, a site that hasn't been checked for a while shows Audit now. Your plan sets how often you can audit the same site:

  • Free: once a month.
  • Pro: once every 7 days.
  • Team and Agency: once a day.

To audit on a timetable instead, see Schedules and alerts.

If something goes wrong

  • "We couldn't reach" your site: check the address. You can choose Add anyway, and we'll report what we can.
  • Your site "is already in this workspace": press the button to open it instead.
  • Your site's "bot protection may stop our checker": pages it stops show as Blocked, not as errors. If an audit says your site is blocking our checker, choose How to let us in and pass the details to whoever manages your firewall.
  • "This site was audited recently": your plan's next audit date for that site is shown.
  • "You have reached the site limit for this plan": remove a site or upgrade.
